Sure, it’s not a quick fix. None of the earth’s environmental problems are a quick fix. But yes, we need to address the cause as well as engineer ways to repair the damage. If reducing the number of people on the planet deals with the cause, then governments need to be talking about that.

I’m sure shipping must be responsible for significant CO2 emissions. Look how much is shipped around the globe by air, sea and land. Most of the fresh fruit I look at in the supermarket comes from overseas, so it all requires international shipping. How much would we reduce emissions by if we bought more from local producers?

I’m not sure that mankind would survive a mass extinction. Everything on the planet is too interconnected, humans, animals, plants, ecosystems. A mass extinction would affect food and fresh water supplies at the very least.

What is also essential is that people think beyond their own lifetimes. It will take the planet centuries to recover, so we need to focus on future generations. Have less children, but also work to create a better future for them. This paradigm shift will continue through them and their children.

DayWalker replied to the topic US Population Growth v Consumption in the forum Overpopulation Discussions

Both need to happen. People need to be less material driven for a start. And less of us would, of course, reduce consumption. It’s not rocket science, yet overpopulation is continually overlooked.

Scary numbers. I live in a small city with a population of 145,000 and even that feels crowded sometimes. I can’t imagine the claustrophobia of over 10 million people in one city, let alone the noise, air pollution, heat, etc. Who would want that life?

I’ve tried to calculate roughly how much the population would increase by in the next 10 years if every new couple had 7 children. It’s a bigger number than I can deal with. Perhaps Boris Johnson knows?

I’m a huge advocate for activism. When you’re governed by greedy politicians and the media has its own agenda (which generally includes not reporting the truth), what other options are left? The risk is that we allow activists to become demonised. I’m constantly shocked at how much hate I read, that is aimed at people like Greta…[Read more]

Most reports seem to indicate that we will surpass 8 billion people before the end of this year, which is both staggering and frightening. Some very interesting statistics on the Overpopulation Facts page on this site. An additional 1 billion people in just the last 11 years. Even if growth does slow slightly, it’s still more than out planet can support.
