Digital Population Clock Unveiled In India
A new digital population clock has been unveiled in the city of Bengalaru, the capital of India’s southern Karnataka state.
The digital counter has been installed outside the Institute for Social and Economic Change’s (ISEC) Population Research Centre, along with a Census Data Research Workstation, in order to provide real-time estimates of the population of Karnataka and India.
The project is a joint venture between the ISEC, and the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW). It updates Karnataka’s population every minute and the country’s population every two seconds.
Kal Singh, the Director General of the Statistics Division at MoHFW, inaugurated the clock and the census data research workstation, declaring: “The clock will play a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of population trends.”
The new census data research workstation will further strengthen the academic research, policy analysis, and capacity building in population studies.
Population clocks are surprisingly uncommon, indicative perhaps of how most governments and policy makers try to ignore the critical issue of human overpopulation. A digital clock displaying the world population can be found on the Yan Vana website.
