A recent study by Project Drawdown revealed that an estimated 225 million women have an unmet need for voluntary reproductive healthcare. The study argues that reducing future populations by empowering women through education and reproductive healthcare, could help to cut 85 Gigatonnes of CO2 emissions by 2050.

Do you think that empowering women would realistically control population growth? Or is a more drastic solution needed?

Unfortunately humans, like all animals are wired to reproduce. It’s part of our DNA. But education and empowering women would make a difference. When women see themselves as more than just breeding machines, they see alternative futures. It’s like intelligent birth control!

Giving women the power to make better choices about their lives is critical. Yes, I think it would help to reduce the population in a good way. But there are still too many countries and cultures where women are oppressed. Girls are not even allowed to attend school in Afghanistan any more! How medieval is that? What are they supposed to do, stay at home, cook and produce children?

And what about women’s rights being oppressed by religion? Right wing America and its anti-abortion lobby have been trying to strip women of their rights for years and in some US states they are succeeding. That isn’t doing very much for women’s rights or population control.
